A Blast from the Past

At this time, I would like to take a blast into the past. By a "blast into the past," I mean discuss the scavenger hunt that occurred in late September, which feels like centuries away at this point. Due to my competitive nature, and that of my roommate Jen, the Scavenger Hunt was not a fun and laid-back endeavor for my group, and most notably myself. Yes, I made my group run to every location, scouring the premises to find the number that indicated our successful discovery. I even yelled "Wait for you at the finish line!" to fellow Humanities Scholars as we passed them at various points on campus. Yes, I was already trash talking people whom I had just met a week before. Anyhow, the event proved to be quite a fun adventure, as I had initially expected. I do not know how things would have turned out had we not placed in the top three, but...

Aside from placing, the Scavenger Hunt provided us some time to talk to our wonderful mentors, who answered many of my pressing questions, all suggesting I was a confused freshman. Thus, I am glad that I met some seasoned Humanities Scholars who could give me some insights into the dorm life and Humanities opportunities, as well as a perspective on the overall Ohio State University experience. In addition, this trek helped me to more efficiently learn my way around campus, as well as the locations of many crucial and relevant campus buildings. I hope to meet up with my mentors again, as they were a helpful and insightful bunch.

  1. I admire your team's morale and spunk Sarah, because my group, on the other hand, didn't quite put forth the kind of effort yours did to complete the challenge. Instead of bolting from location to location, my roommates and I decided to move at a more sluggish pace in order to take in the scenery of our new surroundings, enjoying the agreeable autumn weather. We did not have the same sense of competition bubbling inside us, but we definitely established an atmosphere of camaraderie, enjoying our time spent together. In this case, I suppose the hare beat the tortoise. However, we learned enlightening factual material about the several buildings around campus all at a comfortable pace. Yes, our team may have gotten second to last, but all that matters is we had fun right? My philosophy is you have to take time to smell the roses.

  2. Like Steven's group, our Mentor Group moved at a rather slow pace; I am pretty sure we were close to last place. It wasn't that we didn't have a sense of competition pushing us along, but that our mentors did not know where all the locations were themselves. The freshman ended up showing the sophomores around campus and enlightening them on where the student health center was. Although our group was kind of reversed, we still had a lot of fun getting to know our mentors and asking them questions about other aspects of college. It was also nice to take a break from homework and to walk around campus for a while as a nice break from the dorm.

  3. The Scavenger Hunt was a great way to get to know our mentors. Our group decided to be competitive and we rushed to get everything done. We even planned out a route to get around campus quickly. Even thought we did our scavenger hunt at a fast pace we still were able to learn a lot about Ohio State. My mentors gave me a lot of advice about campus life and classes which I really needed at the beginning of the year. Overall, the event was a lot of fun and a much better introduction to Ohio State than the Welcome Week events.
