Foodinc.

Monday, I attended the discussion and video regarding food production.  It wasn't a new topic for me to be exposed to.  In high school, I saw several presentations and wrote several reports on the topic.  One thing I really liked about monday's discussion, however, because it showed just how easy it can be to get around the issues in our agricultural and food production systems.  Also, I had never realized how far-reaching the issues in the system are.
On a more random note, I really enjoyed the pizza that was served.  It was interesting though that we were eating pizza and drinking coke given the discussion and video topic.  I found it somewhat comical.  Overall, I more or less enjoyed the discussion and learning more about the flaws in our food production, and the ways to avoid subscribing to corporate monopolies in the system.

  1. I too went to Food Inc and found it very interesting. There was a lot of good information given, not to mention the awesome organic pizza. It was very eye opening although I feel as if some of these places shown are just the worse places and that it may be a bit bias. I do think that the issues of food and agriculture need to be addressed and we ought to be more careful of what we eat such as Tyson, and to research what we eat more. :)

  2. The movie we watched was very interesting. I did not know that corn is incorporated into so many of the products we consume and use everyday. I did find the videos of the ways the animals were being treated very disturbing. The little chicks were thrown around in the factory as if they were just objects. The cows were pushed around by a bulldozer like vehicle. Many owners of the animals refused to show the conditions that their animals were in. It was just all really sad to see and I hope that the food industry improves the quality of the food in the future.

  3. It was great seeing Melissa lead a discussion. This was my first opportunity to meet her, and I'm glad I did. She really knew all the material really well and seemed really excited to share all the information. The speaker was very interesting. I had never heard of a "food desert" before her and now I'm very aware of the problem. I definitely learned a lot from this event.

  4. I agree that the presentation that was illustrated to us was very informative and entertaining, although it was rather disturbing to see what truly happens to those poor poor chickens. Overall it was a memorable experience and an event that I'll remember every time I eat something from North Commons.

Also on a really random note, upon seeing this film I thought it would be a great idea to become a vegetarian, which lasted about two hours, AKA my next meal. So yeah, at least I tried.

  5. I already knew about the information presented in the film but it was presented in a way that didn't make it boring to hear it all over again. It still makes me sad to see the condition the animals are put in. i also don't like how the animals going to slaughter get to watch their predecessors' demise. I feel like that s just a horrible last memory. I was much more interested in the guest speakeers and I wish they had more time. The woman who was talking about food availablity seemed very passionate about her work. I kinda found it funny that when she said there was a food desert in Columbus I knew where it was before she even said anything: the Hilltop area. (My old neighborhood) The Hilltop may have a fighting spirit but it does not have any luck. Which leads me to the next guest speaker who talked about using gutters as planters and compositing. I think his ideas should be implemented in the Hilltop perhaps with some funding from the government so that the residents their can have some fresh food in their back yards. All in all it was a great learning experience.
