I thought that the House/Divided performance was very interesting. I had never seen a play that relied to heavily on multimedia before, so that struck a chord with me. Having read The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck before, I thought that the juxtaposition of the Joad's situation and the mortgage crisis was an apt one. The actors engaged me, as did the set design, but when the intercalary chapters were read, I started to lose interest. I felt like more could have been done to make those sections--the ones where the generalities of the conditions of the Dust Bowl era were described-- more engaging.
I've seen a lot of plays in my life and so I'd have to say that overall it was an alright performance. I did learn a little about the mortgage crisis and the process of one losing their home, but to me I didn't think it was that easy to follow coming in with very little background knowledge as the to nuances of the crisis and its causes.

I thought the House/Divided performance was incredibly interesting and kept my attention the entire time. They did a good job jumping back and forth between the 1930 era and the modern time. Throughout the play I felt that my emotions were heightened as we were witness to a house getting raided and cleaned out. By including a woman who experienced foreclosure it made the whole experience even more disheartening. We were able to see what has been happening throughout America.
ReplyDeleteAs for the after portion, it was my first time experiencing a crowd that was partly hostile. It was a bit nerve wracking to see how others were willing to portray themselves. Nonetheless, it was a great experience!
I also attended the House/Divided performance. The play was intense and exciting! They flashed back and forth between the 1930s and present-day foreclosure crisis with an emphasis on the book "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. A lot of really great lighting and effects made the play interesting, and the message definitely left an impact on me. There was a little show-down during the audience portion after the performance that left me a little shaken-up, but I really enjoyed the play and I'm glad I went!
